Bright, minimalist rooms and villas in an expansive beach front property with excellent facilities and great sea views make for a romantic and private getaway for couples and young families. The plush villas come with opulent outdoor bathrooms and deep plunge pools in their own walled courtyards.
Sala Samui lies at the southern end of Choeng Mon, a busy bay bordered by rocky headlands and dotted with several resorts and bungalow operations, 10 minutes’ drive from the nightlife action of Chaweng and the airport, and around 30 minutes from Lamai. The bay is great for swimming and water sports but feels a little crowded.
Style & character
The resort is a neatly arranged complex of rooms and villas with high gabled roofs in contemporary and minimalist Thai-style. The villas are hidden behind high walls that provide maximum privacy. When the sun reflects off the many bright surfaces, there’s a real sense of calm and luxury.
Service & facilities
Service is prompt, efficient, never intrusive and a little formal.
There’s a 25-metre black pool for adults and a shorter white pool for families. Kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are free of charge, as are yoga sessions and Thai language lessons. Guests are free to use the well-equipped two-storey gym.
The spa has four plain treatment rooms, two steamrooms and a room dedicated to manicures and pedicures. Guests may also enjoy massages by the pool.
Movies are shown on a big screen on the beach twice a week.
- Fitness centre
- Room service
- Steam room/hammam
Rooms and villas are truly spectacular and guests may be tempted to forego the beach to lounge in the privacy of their accommodation. Beige and brown tones dominate with beautiful linen on the ceilings and in the small courtyards fluttering in the breeze, suggesting an understated ocean ambience.
The rooms feature plunge pools on the ground floor and balconies with comfortable sofa seating on the first floor. All rooms come with air-conditiong, a safe, tea and coffee-making facilities, an iPod docking station, TV and DVD player, an eclectic selection of soaps and moisturisers, fresh and dried fruit and a minibar. The bathrooms are open to the elements and most feature tubs as well as showers.
Food & drink
The al fresco Sala restaurant serves a combination of interesting Thai dishes and western meals with a simple lunch menu that includes sandwiches. The fine dining in the evening is more sophisticated and dishes are well presented but lack conviction.
It’s possible to arrange a barbecue in the privacy of one’s villa or in a tent on the beach.
The breakfast buffet, with breads, pastries and jams all made in-house, is impressive. Guests may also enjoy à la carte all-day breakfast. The second eatery, Pangaea, open for dinner, serves Italian cuisine.
The Sala Samui offers a detox package that includes a moderate exercise programme and two week-long dietary plans of mainly western, low protein foods supplemented by detox shakes along with pro-biotic treatment and massages.
